Copenhagen

Copenhagen, the charming capital of Denmark, effortlessly blends historic charm with modern Scandinavian cool. This captivating city invites you to explore its picturesque canals by boat, scooter, or bike. Indulge in the Danish concept of "hygge" with cozy cafes and delectable pastries, or pick up some home decor items at one of their many Scandinavian design shops.

Best Time To Go

The best time to visit Dubrovnik is from April - May when flowers are blooming and there are fewer crowds. During summer, the days are long and although generally warm sometimes the weather is unpredictable. If Christmas markets are on the top of your list, November and December would be a great time, though it will be cold with an average of 36F in December, so bundle up.

Things To Do
  • Eat delicious food: grab a delicious Smørrebrød, a traditional open-faced sandwich featuring a variety of seasonal ingredients on rye bread. Shrimp and Marinerede sild (pickled herring) were our favorites.  On the high end, try your luck at getting a reservation at Noma or Restaurant No. 2 by the dock.

  • Be amused at Tivoli Gardens: this is likely the most beautiful amusement park you'll ever visit and the inspiration behind Disneyland.  As the second oldest amusement park in the world, it boasts 30 rides, stunning landscapes, and fantastic restaurants. On the old wooden rollercoaster, be prepared, as there is a train operator in a cart pulling the breaks every single ride.

  • Stroll along Nyhavn district: Lined with colorful buildings along the waterfront, this iconic area offers charming shops, restaurants, and cafes.

  • Visit The Little Mermaid: arguably the most visited tourist spot in the city, it's definitely a must-see for any travel bucket list.  While you are in the area, make a stop at Windmill at Kastellet, a Dutch-style windmill that originally supplied the citadel with flour.

  • Visit the Rosenborg Castle: originally built as a summerhouse in 1606, this Renaissance castle is very well preserved with beautiful gold leafed furniture, marble floors, and ornate ceilings.  As a rose lover, this was a highlight as the garden features an amazing assortment of roses. Don't miss the Crown Jewels, which is located in the basement.

  • Witness the Guard Change: the Danish Royal Guard marches from Rosenborg Castle to Amalienborg Palace daily from 11:30 am to noon.

Off the Beaten Path

  • See Copenhagen from the water: we recommend a smaller group tour like Hey Captain  where you can go through smaller canals as opposed to the large tour boats. The captain was incredibly informative and friendly.

  • Indulge in Scandinavian design: Copenhagen is a design lover's paradise. Check out Illums Bolighus, a multi-level store filled with beautiful household furnishings and decor.

  • Freetown Christiania: this unique community operates with its own set of rules based on the hippie movement.  The area has colorful houses, alternative lifestyles, and artistic expression.  It is most famous for its open cannabis shops.  It wasn't our cup of tea, but perhaps it may be yours.

Where To Eat
  • Noma: world renowned, this is an experiential meal.  Check out my blog post detailing our dinner.

  • Palaegade: one of the best Smorrebrod restaurants in the city.  They make their open-faced sandwiches in classic Danish tradition while also incorporating modern cooking methods.

  • TorvehallerneKBH: a public market where you can find amazing food vendors, good souvenirs, and gourmet food.

Travel Tips
  • Take a scooter.  Copenhagen is one of the most bike, pedestrian, scooter friendly places in the world.  The cars will yield and are experts at navigating between small wheels and feet.

  • Noma hopefuls should put your name on the waitlist for a communal table like we did, you may just get lucky.

  • If you have time, go troll hunting for the Six Forgotten Trolls.  They are located in 6 different areas of Copenhagen. Definitely fun for kids.

*We stayed here and have mixed feelings.  The location, staff, and food was top notch, but our room was unbelievable small and our shower would flood into the vanity area.
